What is grief yoga?

Grief yoga is a compassionate practice that uses movement, breath, sound and stillness to help us truly live with grief and not run from it. It helps us connect to more love, peace and empowerment, even when we feel all hope is lost or the ground is crumbling beneath us.

You don’t have to be fit, young, thin or “bendy” to experience the healing and freedom that grief yoga can provide – just flexible in your heart.

Grief may come from the death of someone we love, but it can also arise from change, illness, heartbreak, lost dreams, or any meaningful ending.

Grief yoga works because grief lives in the body. It can feel like heaviness in the heart, tightness in the throat, tension in the shoulders, or an emotional backpack we carry everywhere, filled with regrets, “whys,” shame, remorse, loss, and anger.

In grief yoga, we give ourselves a safe space to acknowledge the grief that is present and experience the cycle of transformation: awareness, expression, movement, connection, and surrender.

Grief yoga is not about fixing grief or forcing it to disappear. It is about honoring the truth of our experience and creating space for love – and even joy – to exist along with our sorrow.

Through grief yoga, I have seen people finally process and channel pain that they may have run from or resisted for years into a new way of living, with peace and acceptance.

You can do grief yoga in a chair, on a mat, in person with a teacher, with a guide online – in so many ways.
